Louise Josephine McCovy

May 23, 1953 — June 17, 2022

Denver

On Friday, June 17, 2022, Louise Josephine McCovy (Shoopman), age 69, entered eternal life peacefully in her sleep surrounded by those she loved most. Louise was born on May 23, 1953, in Columbus, Indiana to her parents Willard Lee Shoopman and Cecilia R. Shoopman (Levings). Louise attended Bishop Lillis High School in Kansas City where she was an accomplished scholar and athlete, lettering in cheer and volleyball. After graduating high school, Louise relocated to Colorado. Even though she lived in Colorado for the rest of her days, she remained true to her roots as an avid fan of the Chiefs and Royals and took “The Show Me State” nickname as her personal catch phrase.

As the youngest of five and the only girl, Louise learned early on to be assertive and resilient; traits that served her well later in life while raising five children as a single parent and playing “momma” to so many others. She loved being outdoors, especially in the garden tending to her roses or having snowball fights with her grandchildren. She had a knack for catching people off guard with her pranks and quick-witted humor. Many will remember her as being lively and fun to be around, never shying away from being the center of attention. At 5’3” she was small in stature but had a way of commanding authority and was often the loudest one in the room – especially if the Chiefs where playing!

Louise is preceded in death by her mother Cecilia R. Shoopman (Levings), her father Willard Lee Shoopman, and brothers Roy Lee Shoopman, William “Bill” Shoopman, and Harold Shoopman. She is survived by her five children, Danielle McCovy, Lucretia Shaw (Eric), John P. McCovy II, John Henry McCovy Jr. (Jessica), Jackson Willard McCovy (Valerie); her grandchildren, Adonte Gallegos, Acacia Gallegos, Aliya Shaw, Alauna McCovy, Miles Shaw, and Henry McCovy; brother Kenneth Shoopman (Vicky); her many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews; and Liberty (pet snake)! She will also be dearly missed by her friends from United. The family is in the process of setting up a scholarship fund to honor her legacy. Please contact the family for details.
